The movie STAY is full of many twists and turns that keep
your head spinning. The film stars Ewan McGregor and
Naomi Watts, with Ryan Gosling, a blind Bob Hoskins,
and a nutty bleached blond Janeane Garofalo.
Sam Foster (McGregor) is a psychiatrist who temporarily
takes the case of Henry Letham (Gosling) from a sick
colleague. Henry is depressed and suicidal, announcing
to Sam that he is going to kill himself Saturday at
midnight, when he turns 21. Henry is an art student
who admires a painter who had committed suicide infamously
on his 21st birthday a long time ago.
As Sam gets into Henry's world in an attempt to save
him, he gets drawn into a place which takes his rational
world and turns it upside down.
Sam's girlfriend, and former suicidal patient Lila Culpepper
(Watts), has overcome a lot and bears witness to his
growing instability, in turn trying to save Henry's
life, and help Sam in his state of confusion.
What is real? What is not? Who is the crazy one?
This dark, stylish psychological thriller is set in
New York City, and is full of solid performances from
all three lead actors. Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) is
fantastic as the disturbed Henry Letham.
I must point out that you have to think a bit. But be
patient, sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself. All is
explained at the end, and a very good reward awaits
you.
Makes you think about your own mortality and the fine
line between life and death.
Directed by Marc Forster (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland).
